We’re all doing it. I’ve done it, you’ve done it. And I want to save us from this trap we set for ourselves.
When you’re a smart and creative person like you, it’s easy to fall into the trap of trying to innovate things right out of the gate. We want to be original, share our brilliance, and do the thing our own way.
But let’s take a second to think about how we learned to walk.
Walking is actually pretty complicated, but we managed to pick up on it by watching others who already knew how to walk. Watching led to imitating which ultimately led to mastery. Once we were comfortable walking, then we were able to take it to a new level and put our spin on it by skipping, running, and jumping.
Just like walking, when we try a new thing, we have to get the basics down before we can start exploring all that hasn’t been done before. I know, this can feel hard, but trust me! Take a minute and watch people who are doing similar things to what you want to do.
Ask yourself:
- What’s working for them?
- Why is it working for them?
Once you understand the answers to these questions, get it to work for you!
You’ll know you’re finally ready to innovate when what they’re doing is consistently working for you too.
Then it’s go time! At this point, you are equipped with the expertise needed to innovate well and do things your own way.
So if you’re stuck trying to figure out how to be the most unique or the most creative in your approach, the good news is you can let that go for now.
Learn to walk, and then when you’re ready… show off your cool dance moves. We’ll be ready for ya!
